Rubrik Inc., a startup focused on data security with a zero-trust approach, is utilizing the potential of generative artificial intelligence to aid VMware users in swiftly recovering from cyberattacks.

In a recent development, the company unveiled its latest innovation, the AI-Powered Cyber Recovery tool. This groundbreaking solution harnesses the capabilities of large language models to assist teams in effectively managing the aftermath of cyber incidents, ensuring minimal data loss and downtime.

Rubrik has established a strong reputation as a high-quality enterprise backup and recovery solution provider. Its product portfolio encompasses many environments, including public cloud, private cloud, and on-premises systems. It utilizes petabyte-scale archival storage to achieve cost-effective, long-term data retention. This includes seamless integration with major cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, OpenStack, and VMware.

The newly introduced AI-Powered Cyber Recovery tool is designed for customers utilizing virtual machines to host mission-critical applications. According to the company’s explanation, cyberattacks pose a significant threat to virtual machines (VMs), underscoring the importance for enterprises to swiftly and securely recover any crucial data lost during such incidents.

The cyber recovery process remains labor-intensive and time-consuming, even for those well-versed in the field. Furthermore, a significant issue arises as numerous organizations struggle to restore data impacted by cyberattacks fully. Rubrik highlights its State of Data Security report, revealing that merely 16% of businesses could successfully retrieve 100% of their data following a ransomware incident.

Anneka Gupta, Chief Product Officer at Rubrik, emphasized the importance of this fact, stressing that all companies should be mindful of it due to the profoundly unpredictable nature of cyberattacks. He stated, “The complexity and sophistication of these threats make it challenging, if not impossible, for organizations to recover data quickly, safely, and with minimal data loss.”

The company believes that generative AI can significantly impact, utilizing models equipped with precise instructions for post-cyberattack scenarios, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted recovery processes. The startup elucidates that the AI-Powered Cyber Recovery tool incorporates guided workflows and presents various suggestions to security teams. This aids them in executing essential tasks necessary to reinstate operations and resume normalcy swiftly.

Precisely, the novel tool facilitates companies in accomplishing three key objectives: Initially, it formulates a strategic plan to assist the company in achieving its recovery point objective by utilizing the most recent and untainted data. The tool delivers precise, step-by-step guidance to restore unaffected files from the latest snapshot, simultaneously reverting affected files to the snapshot just before the attack was initially identified.

Secondly, the Rubrik’s tool effectively mitigates the risk of reinfection by implementing a more secure VM recovery process. This entails identifying the necessary vSphere templates for reconstructing a pristine and secure VM that ensures the absence of any unnoticed vulnerabilities in the operating system.

Thirdly, Rubrik utilizes AI-enabled task lists to minimize application downtime. These task lists utilize Rubrik’s data threat analytics to offer precise recommendations on selecting the appropriate snapshot or files for a successful and secure recovery process.

“We understand that every minute counts when faced with a cyberattack, and Rubrik AI-Powered Cyber Recovery helps organizations take advantage of every second, empowering them to get their business-critical systems and data back up and running,” Anneka Gupta added.

This recent announcement builds upon Rubrik’s collaboration with Microsoft Corp., which integrated Rubrik Security Cloud with Microsoft Sentinel and Azure OpenAI Service. This integration harnesses the power of generative AI and natural language processing to enhance the cyber recovery process further. Rubrik has stated that they will showcase their new AI-Powered Cyber Recovery tool at the upcoming VMware Explore 2023 event in Las Vegas from August 21 to 24, 2023.
